With millions of pet accounts also trying to get attention, you’ll need to find ways to make your content stand out. This doesn’t mean you need to perform extraordinary feats; rather, it’s about how you present your dog and create engaging content.

Strategies to Stand Out

Finding Your Unique Angle

To succeed on Instagram, you must find something unique about either your dog or your editing process/content.

This doesn’t necessarily mean that your dog needs to perform unique tricks or possess extraordinary skills! Instead, focus on how you present your dog.

Consider the color schemes, filters, and video styles that you use. Getting inspiration from other successful pet influencers can be incredibly helpful.

Watch videos from accounts with big followings and analyze what makes their content appealing. What makes you want to share a video with friends or family?

Is it the humor, the relatability, or the creativity? By identifying these elements, you can start to craft your own unique content.

 

Building a Pet Influencer Brand: The Three Phases

Building a successful pet influencer brand involves being very strategic. You really cannot just throw videos of your pet on Instagram and all of a sudden go viral and get famous. It just doesn’t work that way!

I like to break it down into three phases: creating your presence, building your tribe, and converting your following. Let’s talk through each of these phases!

Phase 1: Creating Your Presence

The first step in making your dog famous on Instagram is creating a presence.

This involves treating your Instagram account as a business from the very beginning. Sounds easy enough but this serious is SO important.

Your dog’s Instagram is not a fun hobby if you want to make sustainable income from it! You have to consider it a second job.

This mindset will help you create a sustainable brand!

We’ll talk about this later in the article but high-quality content is crucial. Invest in good lighting and equipment to ensure your videos and photos are brightly lit and visually appealing.

Your content also needs to be engaging and strategic, not just filler. I see “filler” content way too often with new creators. Don’t let that be you!

High-quality content will help you attract and retain followers.

Phase 2: Building Your Tribe

Once you have established your presence, the next step is to build your tribe.

This phase is all about engaging with your audience and creating a loyal follower base.

Interact with your followers through comments, stories, and direct messages on Instagram. Building a community around your pet’s account is so important for long-term success. It may not feel like it’s too important right now, but every “super fan” that you can get will drastically change your outcomes in the long run.

Within a few months of consistent effort, you should aim to secure small paid deals or free products from brands. This will give you valuable experience and help build your credibility as a pet influencer.

But, there is no perfect timeline for this. Some clients I’ve worked with can achieve amazing results in just 3-6 months while others can take much longer.

There are many factors that can affect your success timeline. Don’t get frustrated if you are a month or two in and not making any money yet!

Phase 3: Converting Your Following

The final phase involves converting your following into a revenue stream.

As your following grows, explore various monetization strategies such as creating and selling merchandise, using affiliate codes, and securing larger brand deals.

Cultivating a group of super fans who are highly engaged and supportive is crucial.

I cannot talk enough about this. It truly makes a difference, even if you buy a small clip on ring light! Something is better than nothing.

Avoid posting just for the sake of it; make sure your posts are engaging and strategic. High-quality content will help you build a loyal following and brands will take notice of you!

Understanding Your Audience

Identify and understand your target audience.

Tailor your content to their preferences and interests to increase engagement. Knowing what your audience likes and responds to will help you create content that resonates with them.

If you make content that they like, then they’ll engage more with your content. Seems simple enough but many creators struggle with this.

Regularly review your Instagram insights to understand what type of content performs best.

Use this data to refine your strategy. Continuous experimentation and adaptation are key to finding what works best for your audience.

You won’t figure it out right away. In fact, I learned that it takes 30-100 videos to truly define your audience’s video style – if you’re being strategic and learning from your mistakes!

Stay patient and consistent with your efforts. As mentioned above, the chances of being an overnight success is actually very, very slim.

Yes, you may have a few videos go viral (yay!) but it takes daily effort and posting to grow a loyal audience.

You can try something like creating and selling branded merchandise such as t-shirts and stickers. Partner with pet-related brands and promote their products to earn commissions through affiliate marketing.
