UGC vs Influencers

If you’re new to the world of pet content creation, you’ve likely come across terms like UGC creator (User-Generated Content) and pet influencer.

While both offer exciting opportunities, they are distinct paths with unique goals, income potential, and skill requirements.

Let’s break down the differences so you can decide which aligns best with your goals!

What is a UGC Creator?

UGC, or User-Generated Content, refers to content that you create for brands to use on their platforms. As a UGC creator:

  • You don’t need a large social following.
  • Your focus is on producing high-quality, engaging content that fits a brand’s aesthetic and goals.
  • The content you create will appear on the brand’s social media pages, website, or ads—not your own.
  • Income is typically active, meaning you get paid per piece of content you produce.

For example, if you create a video showcasing a pet toy for a brand, they pay you directly for the video. You don’t need to post it on your profile or worry about follower engagement.

Who is UGC Ideal For?

  • Pet owners with creative skills but few followers.
  • Beginners looking to earn money immediately without building an audience.
  • Content creators comfortable adapting to brand needs and styles.

What is a Pet Influencer?

A pet influencer builds a social media presence around their pet’s unique personality or lifestyle. As a pet influencer:

  • You grow and maintain your own audience.
  • Your influence allows you to partner with brands for sponsored content, promotions, and collaborations.
  • You can diversify your income through ads, affiliate marketing, brand deals, and even merchandise.
  • Income can include passive revenue streams, like YouTube ad earnings or affiliate commissions.

For example, with 100,000 followers on Instagram, you could earn thousands of dollars per sponsored post while still making ad revenue from YouTube videos featuring your pet.

Who is Pet Influencing Ideal For?

  • Those passionate about growing a loyal audience.
  • Pet owners willing to invest time and effort in building a social presence.
  • Creators who want the flexibility to explore multiple income streams.

Basic Influencer Terms Every Beginner Should Know

To fully understand these roles, familiarize yourself with these key terms:

  • Engagement Rate: The percentage of your audience that interacts with your content (likes, comments, shares). Crucial for influencers.
  • Active Income: Money earned directly from completing a task, such as creating UGC content.
  • Passive Income: Money earned continuously after initial effort, such as ad revenue or affiliate sales.
  • Brand Collaboration: A partnership where a brand pays or provides products in exchange for content promotion.
  • Niche: A specific topic or audience focus. For example, “adventurous cats” or “dog grooming tips.”

Why I Chose to Focus on Influencing (But Also Do UGC)

I chose to primarily be a pet influencer because I love the creative freedom and the opportunity to build a personal connection with my audience.

Sharing my pet’s adventures brings me joy, and growing a loyal community has opened doors to incredible collaborations with brands.

Additionally, the passive income opportunities—such as ad revenue from YouTube or affiliate sales—has turned being a pet influencer into a legitimate full time job!

Once you’ve built a strong following, your influence works for you even while you’re not actively creating, which is a huge advantage. This was a really big deal for me when I became pregnant and I was able to still earn money on my cat influencer pages without putting in more time and effort.

That said, you don’t have to strictly choose between being an influencer or a UGC creator—they can complement each other beautifully.

I also take on UGC projects because it allows me to earn active income while maintaining the creative freedom of being an influencer!

As an influencer, I already have the skills and equipment to create high-quality content, so offering UGC services to brands is a natural extension of my work. This balance lets me enjoy the long-term benefits of passive income as an influencer while still having consistent, project-based earnings through UGC creation.

Combining both approaches can be a smart way to diversify your income while building your dream career in pet content creation.

I outlined the difference between active income and passive income below. I talk about these concepts a lot in my Youtube videos and in the Petfluencer Secrets Group Coaching Program so I want to make sure you know what I am talking about!

Which Path Should You Choose?

The choice between UGC creator and pet influencer depends on your goals and time:

  • Choose UGC if you want to start earning immediately and aren’t ready to build a social following.
  • Choose Influencing if you’re passionate about sharing your pet’s journey and are willing to invest time in creating a long-term loyal audience.

Understanding the difference between a UGC (User-Generated Content) creator and a pet influencer is crucial for beginners in pet content creation.

UGC creators produce content for brands to use on their platforms without needing a large social media following. This path allows creators to earn income immediately by focusing on high-quality, brand-specific content.

In contrast, pet influencers build their own social presence, grow a loyal audience, and leverage their influence to partner with brands.

Influencers can diversify income through sponsored posts, ad revenue, and other streams, but it requires consistent effort and time to grow a following. At the same time, one huge benefit is the ability to earn money passively and over a longer period of time.

Choosing between the two paths depends on your goals! Both paths can be rewarding, offering opportunities to turn your love for pets into a profitable and fulfilling career.
